I think Sophocles is trying to say that if you are competing for anything like a sport or a race you should just play by the rules and try to loose fairly and try to win fairly instead of cheating and doing drugs and winning like that. That wouldn't be the honorable thing to do. Winning because of you and not drugs is the way to win.
