I think this quote is trying to say it's better to be alone and choose the right than to be with company that just do the wrong things. If you stay with that group of people who do the wrong things like smoking and drinking than you are not going to get anywhere in life being with those people because they are choosing the wrong. Even if you are alone you can feel good about yourself because you know that you chose the right.
